BIO, (detailed):
Oh boy, where to start? How about at the beginning? My beginning, which was I believe around 10 in the evening on a cold January night (26th) in the year 1961. Just 6 days after the inauguration of a man I have the utmost admiration for and one of the 20th century's greatest public servants and humanitarians, John F. Kennedy. Mom and dad were living in the town I currently live in, Elkton, Ky, actually only about 3 blocks from where I now live. Dad was out and cousin Rosamond was staying with my mom who was all of 18 years old. Dad was 30. Dad was a high school biology teacher, mom was in his class. You get the picture. Back to me. On this January night with my mom and cousin at home (pop where were you) I suppose I began moving around in mommy's tummy and off to Jennie Stuart Hospital in Hopkinsville, Kentucky where I arrived safe and sound.
Our family soon moved from the big city (Elkton, pop 2000) 8 miles away to the country (Fairview, Ky, pop 300). My great-grandfather had a farm in Fairview and we moved to a house on a lot purchased from that farm. That would be my home for the next 14 years. Mom and dad went their separate ways at that time and mom remarried a farmer in Clifty, Ky. That would be my home for the next 4 years until I graduated from Todd Central High School in Elkton in 1979.
I played basketball, baseball and golf in high school. Not great at any of them but managed to get a spot on a junior college baseball team (Motlow State) in Tullahoma, Tn. So on September 14th, 1979 off to Tullahoma, in my little yellow Mercury Capri, I went. I was so SCARED. Not sure why but I was. It was only about 150 miles away but at the time it seem SO far away and I knew absolutely no one at all in the town except the baseball coach who I had only met once. I literally slowed the car down on about 3 occasions considering turning around and going back home... but I didn't. And my freshman year there turned out to be probably the best year of my life. It was truly almost like a fairy tale. Sophomore year, not so great. Freshman year though, I'll probably have to spend a paragraph or two on that.
I could probably count the number of dates I had in high school on one hand but in the first two weeks at Motlow State I had been on 3 dates with 3 different girls. Two of the girls were truly amazing (more on that later) and the 3rd I only went out with once, she was nice and cute but don't think I ever saw her again. Back to the other two. Never, NEVER had a girl EVER ask me out but in my first two weeks at Motlow in front of the school libray a beautiful girl named Angie Johnson asked ME out. We had met briefly at a school function but I never expected that to happen. By the way, yes I said she was gorgeous and she was. She was a sophomore and I came to learn later that the year before she was Miss Motlow. Daughter of a lieutenant colonel. We went of 5 straight weeks. But in the meantime... I met someone else.
